L-SERVER HD - Developed by Hollywood Studio Engineers
L-Server, introduced in 2003 at NAB remains a premiere open architecure film and video conforming system. L-Server was developed by   Award Winning Hollywood engineers from major moption picture studios. L-Server™ technologies have been tested  in profesional environments by demanding and knowledgable studio professionals. L-Server can capture and playback uncompressed raw HDTV in real time directly from tape or HD Camera source.  L-Server was the first Open Source and Open Architecture Linux based HD server and its lineage is impressive. L-SERVER has an option that will enable you to wrap your raw video with MXF in real-time.  L-Server™  simple editing functionality provides a basic editing system that enables you to view and edit clips or still video images, anywhere on the time-line.  The time-line editor enables you to extract, update, and replace a raw frame or series of raw frames.

HD-DDR Deck Control
L-Server has Serial RS232/422 control ports with Sony protocol for external deck control. We have included software algorithms that are within  the deck control interface and make adjustments for tape deck frame offset from requested to landed frame position. This makes the capture system frame accurate every time even on captures from multiple decks.

GAMMA AND CONTROL ADJUSTMENT
The operator has Gamma controls  using a built-in flexible bezier curve window. Color adjustments are made using a color curves panel.

NETWORK CONNECTIVITY
Frames can be accessed via network connection for digital effects or computer graphics. Share sequences with multiple computer systems cross platform with Linux, Mac, Unix, PC/Win or other graphics platforms using standard NFS/SMB file system.

CONTROL PANEL SOFTWARE
The operator can control the DDR and/or remote tape deck from a software control panel application giving you to the shot file system, burn-in control, 2D color matrix, Gamma, time code, and burn-in graticules

AUTOMATE VIA SCRIPTING
The optional command line interface allows the operator to customize the capture process with scripts to automate the steps of recording, transfer, process or playback from the DDR to your production environment and requirements.
MXF
Linux Media Arts has been working on MXF technology and systems since 2001 and continues to offer consulting and design services on Linux based MXF. LMA was the first company to  first exhibite  Linux MXFMXF technology at NAB in 2003 and now offers MXF as an option on L-SERVER, CINELERRA, and ENSANTRA.   Please ask how we can help you with your MXF consulting needs and on your system deployment.  MXF is an object subset of AAF and is on the verge of becoming an SMPTE standard. MXF was designed for less complex (less vertically rich) metadata applications, such as news editing and video streaming from servers. Because of its flatter metadata structure, it is better suited to be used as a metadata wrapper within a video signal or a TCP/IP stream. It offers performance benefits over the more complex AAF file structure because of its streamable nature.

Material eXchange Format is an open file format targeted at the interchange of audio-visual material with associated data and Metadata. It was designed and implemented with the aim of improving file-based interoperability between servers, workstations and other content creation devices. These improvements will lead to improved workflows and result in more efficient working than is possible with today’s mixed and proprietary file formats.

Functionality

L-Server™  is extremely functional and designed for ease of use in all conditions, whether in a studio broadcast environment or even in the field. Capture video on the fly, without a cumbersome set-up.  Push a button and choose whatever you like to capture.   Frames are    seen indivudually by the operator and managed directly.  Take your shots and and l-serverdrop them into the EDL in any order.  Pull the shots out of a shot list youre ready to play. Nothing could be simpler or more robust. We guarantee it. The L-SERVER is designed so you can drop frames anywhere in the timeline, one-by-one or by the bunch.  Format mangement is easy, too.  Set the frame size and frame rate where you are working in.  Its easy to switch between any format, on the fly.  The L-Server is so robust, there will be no "hiccups" when switching formats between 1080p, 1080i, and 720p..  Drag and drop clips from the shot list into the EDL window, fetch frames from online disk storage or pull shots from a VTR then hit play to view the shots.

L-Server™  open architecture is plug-in ready. You can use provided L-Server™  plug-ins and also build your own plug-ins for L-Server™ . The L-Server™  Software Development Kit (SDK) enables the developer to build plug-ins, codecs, and special effects. These effects can be dropped right on the L-Server™  video track timeline, providing you the freedom to experiment in a live production environment.  The result is displayed in real time and can be rendered in multiple supported file formats. Inserting specific codecs enables the artist to edit all media wrapped within an MXF file.

FRAME BASED VIDEO

We capture all video on the L-Server as  as a sequence of stills   allowing quick  video for playback, looping, Ping-Pong and forward/reverse play, slow motion or fast play.   The L-Server digital disk recorder offers  High Definition 720p, 1080i and 1080 24psf formats with either 8-bit or 10-bit resolution in uncompressed RGB or YUV color space. The L-Server™™ system is a uncompressed digital disk recorder designed specifically  for video and graphics professionals requiring a powerful and tested recording and playback system.  The L-Server™  is a new design which gives studios more control over shot management, capture and network transfer capabilities. The L-Server can replace broadcasting and video post-production video tape recorder.  Easily access and play clips or frames, thus, offering you many advantages over tape based systems.    Video is captured sequentially as still images at the rate of one file per frame. Instantly access video for playback, looping, Ping-Pong, forward/reverse play, slow motion or fast play.  Frame based file systems allow the user direct  access to any frame in the sequence  for compositing, editing, digital intermediate,  networking, or animation. Its a direct process to  extract, update or replace any frame or frame series from  a sequence.  In other words, any frame can be identifed and manipulated without compromising the sequence.
